Abstract

Soreness of the mouth is a common complaint. Oral ulceration is the usual cause. Most oral ulcers are recurrent and of no known systemic significance, but an important minority are due to more serious local or systemic disease. The labelling of all mouth ulcers as 'aphthous ulcers' is, therefore, potentially dangerous.
