Abstract

In parallel with a critique of existing interpretations, various hypotheses are explored to understand why, despite a manifestly sustained interest and strong conceptual compatibility, Claude Lévi-Strauss did not attempt to modelize cybernetically the regulating capacities of genealogical or matrimonial systems. After « mechanical» and «statistical» models, a third generation of models should reconcile structure and history by describing how these institutions can be stabilized in a contingent environment.
