The patient with concomitant aortic valve disease and small aortic root represents a unique surgical challenge. To replace the native diseased valve with an adequately sized prosthetic valve, the surgeon must be familiar with the various types of prostheses, the surgical techniques for root enlargement and root replacement, and the expected long-term outcomes and implications in order to select the most appropriate operation for each patient.
