Abstract

This article aims tos describe some aspects of the inequality in educational opportunities in Brazil. The descriptive and quantitative analysis made use of micro data from the Census, PNAD and School Enrollment Census. It was verified that 3.8 million children and teenagers between the ages of 4 and 17 did not at end school in 2010. Most of them were poor, black and lived in the countryside. BR$ 11.8 billion were designated per year to bring them in to the system. Analysis at city level suggests a positive correlation between the social economical level of the population and contexts with better conditions to provide and achieve quality education. Likewise, it was verified that using statistical measurements which depict the educational reality at national and state levels may often hide serious inequalities at city levels.
