Abstract

The principle of the design and operation of a closed-chamber distillation system to substantially enhance the recovery efficiency of vaporized salt is described. The system has two adjacent chambers for distillation and condensation that are designed so that, to a high degree of approximation, one-dimensional thermal diffusion of salt vapor takes place from a hotter to a cooler layer. After several preliminary test runs, appropriate operating conditions for the closed chamber distillation system were determined and its performance for salt recovery was tested. The results show that during vacuum pumping, until the temperature of the whole chamber reached about 500?C by setting all heaters to be 600?C, the inner pressure reduces to 0.003 Torr. The recovered salt is found to be composed of 44.12% LiCl and 55.88% KCl, which is similar to the composition of the sample salt.
