Abstract

"Capybara" is a great size rodent that inhabits plains and swamps of South America. The anatomical information on the musculature of this species is scarce. To describe the muscular structures of the pelvic limbs was the objective of the assay. Four pelvic limbs of female bodies were used. The specimens were preserved by traditional anatomical methods. The skin, subcutaneous fat and fascia of the pelvic limbs were removed. Dissection of the different muscle regions was performed to determine origins and insertions, and pictures were taken to record the findings. Observations revealed that the muscles considered for this assay are the same of those described in other pentadactyl mammals, highlighting the great development of the muscles of the region of the hand. The anatomical studies of H. hydrochaeris may help to improve health and production management of the species.
