Abstract

Thirty-six new species of Photinus and 1 of Paraphotinus are described. The new species are from Mexico City (2), Estado de México (15), Hidalgo (6), Morelos (2), Puebla (11) and Tlaxcala (1). The information of 64 species belonging to the genera Aorphalus Zaragoza, Aspisoma Laporte, Aspisomoides Zaragoza, Bicellonycha Motschulsky, Cratomorphus Motschulsky, Lucidota Laporte, Paraphotinus Zaragoza, Phaenolis Gorham, Photinus Laporte, Photuris Dejean, Pleotomus LeConte, Pyractomena Melsheimer, Pyropyga LeConte and Pyropygodes Zaragoza is updated. We present a key to identify subfamilies, tribes, genera and the species from central Mexico. Also, we provide a diagnosis for genera and species. Each generic diagnosis is complemented with the type species, literature where the genus has been mentioned, the species occurring in the region and their geographic distribution. Additionally, the next nomenclatural changes are proposed: new status: Paraphotinus aulophalus (Zaragoza-Caballero y Gutiérrez-Carranza, 2018b), P. furcatus (Zaragoza-Caballero, 2000a), P. tlapacoyaensis (Zaragoza-Caballero, 1996), P. tuxtlaensis (Zaragoza-Caballero, 1995a); new combination: Photinus palaciosi = Macrolampis palaciosi Zaragoza-Caballero, 2015; and restored combinations: Photinus lunicollis Gorham, 1880 and Photinus producta Gorham 1881.
