Abstract

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is caused by antibody-mediated destruction of erythrocytes. AIHA may be primary or secondary to other underlying autoimmune conditions, immunodeficiencies, rheumatologic diseases, infections, or malignancies. The adolescent female is more likely to have secondary AIHA and may be more likely to have a chronic course. Treatment of AIHA in adolescent females necessitates careful consideration of side effects with particular attention to fertility issues and the possibility of pregnancy.
