This chapter gives an introduction to the field. The errors-in-variables (EIV) problem is about modeling and estimation of systems where all measurements are subject to noise. First a number of examples and applications of the EIV problem are presented. Further, an outline of the book as well as several notational conventions are included. Some key concepts from system identification theory that are useful for understanding the book are summarized.
