Abstract

As a GP you are presented with an individual who admits to having an unsafe abortion and is suffering from its consequences. Important issues about recognizing and treating unsafe abortions and miscarriages, especially in relation to the developing world, are discussed. Common problems in sexual and reproductive health that are incorporated into MDG 5 are explored. The problem of early teenage pregnancies is a significant feature in this hypothetical case. One public health measure that can effectively ameliorate this matter is family planning. The benefits and challenges of family planning are raised, including social and cultural barriers. Various contraceptive practices are mentioned. The reader is provided with key components that are necessary to create a successful family planning scheme.
