Abstract

Safe eclipse viewing is a continuing problem for both astronomers and eyecare providers. Too often, the astronomer's enthusiasm for encouraging the public to observe an eclipse is countered by health care providers who consider that even the most minimal risk of eye damage is unacceptable. The challenge is to dispel misconceptions which are commonly held by both the public and many health authorities with regard to the eye hazards of observing solar eclipses.
