Abstract

The deformation behavior of crystal grains of polycrystal aluminum is observed using speckle interferometry. Coarse grained pure aluminum specimens with grains about 5 mm in diameter are fabricated to observe the deformation behavior easily. The specimens are plastically deformed by a tensile and a compression test. Then, the bidirectional in-plaine deformation distributions of the specimen surfaces containing multiple crystal grains are measured. The measurement results show that the various deformation behaviors in each grain are observed. Additionally, the longitudinal, transverse and shearing strains in each crystal grain are analyzed from the measurement results. In the strain maps, the complex deformations and slip bands are observed. © The Society for Experimental Mechanics, Inc. 2014.
