Abstract

Carotid stenting is an alternative to carotid endarterectomy. Compared with carotid endarterectomy, carotid stenting is a less invasive technique that is performed without general anesthesia or sedation. The procedure usually takes 20-30 minutes and can be performed on an outpatient basis in some patients. Periprocedural complication rates are low and comparable to published surgical results. Recent advances in the development of dedicated stents and delivery systems, and in the use of neuroprotective devices, appear to further reduce the periprocedural embolic stroke rate. © 2001 CVRR, Inc.
