Abstract

The two principal objectives of this procedure have been to refine the scale of chemical inhomogeneity and/or to change the composition of a surface layer by material addition. In both cases, sufficiently rapid solidification rates occur to produce metastable surface layers with desirable properties. The present status of this technology is reviewed, with emphasis on the physical metallurgy of the alloys to which it has been applied.
