Displacement-controlled actuators, advanced continuously variabletransmissions and hydraulic hybrid power trainsrepresent new technologies for mobile hydraulic machines, off roadand on road vehicles. These new technologies allowmajor fuel savings and reduced emissions, but they change the performancerequirements of positive displacementpumps and motors. Additionally, the market demand for positive displacementmachines will increase. This paperbriefly discusses these technology trends and the impact on existingpump and motor designs. The three major challengesare efficiency improvements, noise reduction and advancements in pumpand motor control. Examples from theauthors research team documenting the progress in computer modelingof piston pumps and motors will be given.
