Abstract

General training of typographic communication design focused on skill-based practices. Few scholars recognized the importance of conducting continuous academic research in theoretical and methodological aspects and on how to bring the humanistic elements and intellects to typographic design education. In this study, the research team found that ethnographic research method enabled designers to establish new aesthetic perspective and approaches that supports the fusion of cultural and functional qualities for contemporary typographic design. Eventually, the new teaching method increased the awareness to cultural sustainability and the possibility of experimental design. Methods adopted in this study aimed at exploring the effective approach for learning typographic design in undergraduate education. Participants’ feedback and reflection were collected and reflects that ethnographic research was an effective learning experience for elaborating the undergraduate students’ knowledge and skills in typographic design from the living environment to humanistic typographic communication design.
