Abstract

The paper attempts to discuss howthe ideology of disarmament interacted with the dynamics of the balance of power and the equilibrium among the great powers in the period between the First and the Second World Wars. It deals with the principles of the League of Nations and the Washington treaties of 1922 and the failure of the so-called British appeasement and the ultimate failure of the system of collective security system which ensued from the treaty of Versailles of 1919.
