This paper addresses legal disciplines from both a reconstructive perspective (what are they and how do they operate?) and a projective one (what should participants do to adapt to evolving environments?). The first part reconstructs the way participants observe themselves and adjust to common purposes. To that effect, three dimensions are distinguished: first, concerning the type of knowledge that participants validate; second, the methods they develop; and thirdly, the kind of social conducts they promote. In each dimension, several purposes are identified, which failure or success depends on their satisfaction. The second part addresses the projective perspective and undertakes social changes creating uncertainty on the future of disciplinary structures. Nonetheless, the extinction of legal disciplines is not foreseen in the near future. The way disciplines solve their generational succession issues and the fact that they not operate under urgencies make them function well in long term contexts.
