Abstract

This chapter defends Karl Kautsky’s conception of a socialist republic as an alternative to contemporary theories of radical democracy. It also defends Kautsky’s idea of the “democratic-proletarian method” as a means for social transformation and the democratisation of society and state. It ends with a critique of postmodern theories of radical democracy and defends a return to class as a means to re-animate socialist political theory.
