In 1986 the Office of Health Economics published a booklet entitled `Crisis in Research'. This particular treatise primarily addressed the level of financing of fundamental research by government in UK universities and research institutes. However, we may well reflect that since the Society for Drug Research was founded twenty years ago there seems to have been one crisis after another in the Pharmaceutical Industry and the results have had a profound impact on the processes of hunting for and developing new medicines.
