Abstract

This chapter applies previous work in the area of technology innovation, with a particular focus on sport in order to establish a basis for understanding sport technology effectiveness. The goal is to derive a comprehensive understanding of the various stages and types of sport technology innovation, which will allow for a better categorization about its definition. This chapter posits that while the sport technology role of the innovation process depends on external knowledge, organizations must create well-developed management processes. Thus, sport technology innovation needs to reposition the research on sport to a technology context in which emerging technologies play a significant role. It is important to emphasize that this chapter seeks to achieve a better understanding about the role technological innovation plays in sport and attempts to establish a sport technology theory of innovation management. As sport technology innovation is significantly different from existing innovation concepts there needs to be a new theory developed especially for the sport context. This chapter is an attempt to spark debate on the area of sport technology innovation and encourage other scholars with an interest in sport technology innovation to join the debate and spur further research.
