Family businesses are considered the backbone of economy in many countries of the world, their operation, growth, conflict, and business sustainability are critical factors for the success of the global economy. However, there is no conventional definition, there is no consensus on what criteria are the dividing line between family and non-family businesses. One of the main aims of this research is to estimate the proportion of family businesses in the SME (small and medium-sized enterprises) sector by a representative sample, based on operational criteria from the literature. The authors review the Hungarian and international literature on family businesses related to definition issues. Using a control variable, a bootstrap procedure is performed to estimate the lower size categories of family business SMEs. According to the results, the ratio of family businesses in the category of 3–99 employees is 57–66%, in the 1–4 employees category is 66–74%, while in the lowest category (less than 10 employees) is 63–70%. These ratios are lower than those reported in the literature.
