Abstract

The Quality of Service (QoS) is a set of service requirements to be met by the network. The set of service requirements are determined by many levels of QoS building blocks such as the user, application, infrastructure, standard, regulator, etc. These levels increase the complexity in providing QoS. In other words, QoS requirements must be carefully mapped from user-level to application-level, application-level to infrastructural-level, infrastructure-level to standard-level, etc. Apart from intra-network level mapping, there is a need for inter-network level mapping as data may travel via heterogeneous networks such as wired, wireless and mobile networks. Here, intra-network denotes within single network and inter-network denotes between networks. The challenges involved in mapping QoS requirements from wired network to wireless network to mobile network and vice versa are inevitable. The outcome of this chapter throws light on the issues and challenges involved in intra-network and inter-network levels. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.
