Abstract

This paper briefly discusses shear strength, stress-strain behavior, and flow of water in unsaturated soils for purposes of describing the manner in which the properties of waste dump materials will be influenced by changes in water content. Steady state seepage is briefly discussed, but primary emphasis is placed on seepage into an unsaturated waste dump, the changes in saturation that will occur, and the development of perched water mounds.
