Abstract

The author identifies approaches to boards of trustees and college or university administration relations that promote more inclusive learning environments and a campus ecosystem that is welcoming to diversity. Interviews with current and former board members offer insights into the varied level of administrative scrutiny related to diversity and inclusion at their respective campuses. In evaluating the interaction between board governance and university administration, the chapter addresses three features of the theory of systemic racism advanced by Joe R. Feagin: (1) the structures and counterforces that characterize board/administration relations; (2) the dynamic interplay between these structures and forces; and (3) patterns of change or inertia that result from the relationship.
