Pulmonary administration of vaccines might overcome some of the disadvantages related to administration by needle. The lungs are equipped with various immune cells through which a systemic as well as a mucosal immune response can be induced. Different types of devices and formulations can be used to administer vaccines to the lungs, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. The choice for a device and formulation is also dependent on the intended target population. A lot of research has been performed on pulmonary administration of vaccines, but safety data is lacking at the moment.
