Cerebrospinal fluid shunt insertion: Surgical techniques (VP, VA, pleural, gallbladder, LP)

Abstract

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt insertion technique is recognized as one of the mainstays for reducing the incidence of shunt complications. A thorough description of the single steps of the procedure is provided, starting from positioning of the patient to referral points for ventricular and distal catheter placement. In decreasing order of percentage of use, peritoneal, atrial, pleural, and gallbladder peripheral catheter insertions are dealt in detail, with dedicated figures. Lumboperitoneal shunt insertion technique is also included, in order to render the chapter as much comprehensive as possible.
