Only 0.1-1% of all fractures affect the scapula, and most of these can be successfully treated by conservative and functional methods. The cases in which surgical treatment is required cannot be correctly identified without precise knowledge of the various forms of injury and how to classify them. When there is any doubt a second opinion should be obtained. The approaches and implants available mean that good functional results of aftertreatment are possible. © Springer Medizin Verlag 2007.
