The typical TRIZ approach to system improvement is to remove key disadvantages identified in a structural cause-effect model. Using the behavioral state machine model we may try to develop other strategies. The basics of state machine causality models, such as building and simplifying a model as well as converting it to a regular expression representation, have been presented in the previous author’s papers. This paper aims at developing a methodical approach to system improvements by changing transitions between the states in a state machine model. It addresses the analogy between the states-transitions structure of a state machine model and the hardware-software duality, as well as conceptual connections between the cause-effect analysis and Standard Inventive Solutions and other TRIZ tools.
