This chapter describes the principles of operation of a gamma camera and explains how it can be used to acquire SPECT studies. Hybrid SPECT/CT systems are introduced. Methods of reconstructing SPECT images using filtered back projection or iterative reconstruction, including attenuation correction, scatter correction, and resolution recovery, are described. Quality control of SPECT systems is discussed, highlighting the importance of registration between SPECT and CT in hybrid systems.
