Darell Posey was one of the fi rst ethnobiologists to express interest in and advocacy for indigenous communities, leaving a legacy that has infl uenced a whole generation of scientists. This chapter briefl y discusses the ethical and legal aspects of ethnobiology research, considering the rights of peoples and traditional communities. Brazil will be used as a case study, considering that it was one of the fi rst countries to elaborate upon traditional knowledge access and protective legal mechanisms.
