Recent advances in the development of electrodes have opened a new field for the investigation of physiologic processes by direct monitoring of specific signals obtained from the tissues. These new 'tools' will allow the recording of pathophysiologic alterations in the patient, while the 'new cuvettes' used in the diagnosis are the capillaries, the extracellular space, and the individual cells. 56 References are cited.
