This article offers a reflection on the constitution of the sociology of art field in Latin America. In the first part, by means of a short overview of the central areas of interest of sociological activity on our continent, the author points out a relative absence of the arts as a specific area of sociological research. In the second part, a variety of theoretical positions which have marked recent debates on the sociology of art (Heinich, Péquignot, Leenhardt, Esquenazi) are discussed with a view to giving deeper meaning to the pertinence of sociological analysis of the arts. Starting from the idea that works of art form a rich source of knowledge about society, this study aims to contribute to opening new avenues of research which bring together art and sociology.
