Abstract

Fourteen species of damselfishes (Pomacentridae) are so far known to occur in the Colombian Caribbean. Seven of them are classified in the genus Eupomacentrits: E. dorwpunicans, E. planifrons, E. partum, E. leucostictus, E. mellis, E. variabilis and the estuatine species, £. otophorus. Likewise the two Caribbean species of the genus Abudefduf are known from Colombia: A. saxaiilis and A. taurus. One of the more abundant damselfishes of the Colombian coral-reefs is Microspathodon chrysuriis. The young of this species have developed a special behavior, picking at the sides of surgeonfishes and ^ parrotfishes, thus disturbing them. The genus Chromis is reported with four species: C. cyanea y C. multilineata as shallow water species, C. scotti and C. insolata from deeper waters.
