Abstract

The U.S. population is growing older. Due to lower birth and mortality rates, experts predict that persons over 65 years of age will increase in coming years, both in absolute numbers and as a percentage of the population (Moody and Sasser 2012; Marshall and Altpeter 2005). The number of those 65 and older is expected to double from 39.6 million in 2009 to 72.1 million in 2030 (Administration on Aging 2011).
