This paper analyzes the economic reconstruction of Iraq following the 2003, U.S.-led invasion. Tracing the foundations and trajectory of the reconstruction, we explain how efforts have fallen prey to the four reconstruction traps identified by Coyne and Mathers (2010) and Coyne and Pellillo (2011). These traps have hampered attempts to rebuild Iraq’s economy. We conclude with forward-looking policy suggestions regarding Iraq’s economy.
