Electron holography is an imaging method in the transmission electron microscope which allows direct imaging of the phase and amplitude of the electron wavefront. The advantages of directly imaging the phase structure and specific examples of the information available are presented. An equation for the intensity of the hologram obtained by off-axis holography is also given. Moreover, the hologram may be reconstructed optically from a micrograph for a range of applications.
