Abstract

Statins have become a mainstay in cardiovascular and atherosclerotic disease therapy. However their use in congestive heart failure continues to remain a controversial topic. Many earlier non-randomized, retrospective and post-hoc analyses have suggested a benefit, however to date no large scale, randomized, placebo-controlled trial has shown a significant mortality benefit. As such, the current heart failure guidelines have not recommended their use unless there is an existing comorbidity. This chapter seeks to review the literature and data regarding the possible harmful and beneficial effects of statins in heart failure, the outcomes data, and future directions for research and clinical practice.
