Abstract

Efforts at climate prediction in Australia go back many decades but it is only since 1989 that the Bureau’s National Climate Centre (NCC) has been publicly issuing Seasonal Climate Outlooks. These scientific predictions have arisen due to the development of “operational climatology” (analogous to operational short-range weather prediction) in Australia. Much of this has developed out of a greater understanding of the El Nino Southern Oscillation phenomenon.
