Abstract

In this chapter it is argued that schools that are fit for purpose in these new times require a strengthening of educational polices to implement programs that are holistic, flexible and based on social justice. Educational and socio-demographic data are marshaled to point to deep systemic inadequacies in the educational assumptions and practices that currently organize schooling in developed countries. Positive ways forward are outlined that are aimed at the more equitable and appropriate preparation of young people for the challenges that face them in the future.
