She earned her B.Sc. degree in biology at Yarmouk University, her M.Sc. degree in bacteriology and public health at Washington State University, USA, and her Ph.D. (1987) in microbiology at Washington State University, USA. She spent her post-doctoral period at ARS-USDA, Wheat Quality Laboratory at Washington State University, where she gained experience in plant molecular biology. Her research interests are in isolation, identification, and characterization of microorganisms from clinical, food, freshwater, marine, hot spring, and oil-polluted soils, and their biotechnological applications.
