Case studies

Abstract

This chapter presents a number of case studies: products, projects, concepts, experiments, and smart systems using chromogenic materials. These were chosen based on their capacity to represent state of the art of the experimentation and application of materials that change color in different fields including product, interior, fashion, packaging, and visual communication design. They are useful to understand both the functional and expressive nature of these materials, by showing design methods and their results. They show the new qualitative dimensions that smart materials bring into industrial and product design, the role that these new materials and technologies can play, and their influence in different areas of product design. This general scenario of applying chromogenic materials conducted by designers in different parts of the world until today will help to answer questions like who, why, and how about design with materials that change color.
