Given the current visibility of family-school relations, as well as the public policies trying to encourage them, this paper analyzes the Brazilian legislation approach to these relations. The study is based on a documentary research that focuses on the federal educational legislation from 1988 to 2014. The purpose was: to investigate how the documents contemplate the family-school relations; to analyze the levels of regulation in these relations; and, to examine the involved political, social and ideological dimensions expressed in legal texts. We conclude that, invigorated by legislation, family-school relations are not an object of strong state regulation in our country. The articulation between the two instances depends on specific initiatives, often intermittent. Participation of families in the democratic management of education, as a constitutional principle, still poses challenges.
