Abstract

Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract caused by infection and is a commonly seen disease in children. Diarrheal diseases, and the subsequent dehydration, are the second leading cause of death in children worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). This discussion considers the definitions of gastroenteritis, its various etiologies, pathophysiology, diagnostic considerations, and principles of management.
