Abstract

European inland fish culture is presently facing several difficulties: the classical products for the consumption market (trout, carp) is showing decreasing production (bad image of the products with consumers) and the restocking market is falling due to a substantial decline in the number of anglers. Considering such a context, inland pisciculture renewal is possible through a diversification of products and a domestication of new species based on numerous specific local markets which already exist in Europe. The present development of percid culture (Eurasian perch, Perca fluviatilis\; pikeperch, Sander lucioperca) constitutes a good example. However, to induce a real economic dynamic, it is necessary to develop a generic approach for the domestication of new species in order to reduce the costs linked to such processes. © 2007 John Libbey Eurotext - All rights reserved.
