Abstract

The timing of surgical intervention for mitral regurgitation depends primarily on two factors: clinical symptoms; and the left ventricular response to volume overload. However, the aetiology of mitral regurgitation and the likelihood of surgical valve repair also are important factors in the optimal timing of surgical intervention.
