Ultrasonic technology is being employed for tissue coagulation and dissection in endoscopic surgery. This chapter lists the accessories necessary for application of ultrasonic technology in endoscopic procedures enabling proper instrument selection for appropriate procedures. The transducer technology used in these devices has been explained to better understand the concept behind this technology. The tissue effects of ultrasound technology with regards to cavitation, coaptation, coagulation and cutting are described. Injuries that may arise due to improper use of harmonic devices have been listed along with recommendations for their proper use and maintenance. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
