Abstract

It has been estimated that Minnesota has lost approximately half of its original pre-settlement wetlands due to draining and filling for agriculture and development, with some regions of the state having lost more than 90 percent of their original wetlands. Other studies have demonstrated more recent wetland losses for portions of Minnesota. Reported wetland loss of 4.3% over an approximately 27 year period (circa 1980 to 2007) for southwestern Minnesota.
