Abstract

The aim of this paper is to investigate the capability of the 2D and 3D numerical models to simulate flow over Taruc spillway – Khanh Hoa (Vietnam) in the presence of pillars. The 2D numerical model based on Finite Volume method (FVM) to solve shallow water equations is proposed. The commercially-available CFD software package Flow-3D solved Navier-Stokes equations along the volume of fluid (VOF) method to track the location of the free surface at the air water interface. Several hydraulic characteristics such as water level, velocity profile, sequent shocks corresponding with different discharge and upstream water levels conditions are simulated and compared with the results from the hydraulic model tests. The numerical results agree well with experiments.
