Abstract

Abstract. The exploration of emergence is one of the most important and one of the least formalized areas of research in the field of graphical design. This paper presents a formal description of emergent elements in selected periodic designs, namely rosettes, borders and two-dimensional designs. The introduction covers the basic concepts for the area of creative design and emergence. In the following chapters a formal model for graphical design and our concept of using it to define emergent elements is provided.
